Connor Mabbott took a year off after highschool whilst continuing to compete for the Greater Toronto Track Club, and will join the Marauder track team in the fall. We are billing this kid as the next Jimmy Tat with hopes that he will continue his current progression and be the next in line after a trio of talented 400m runners that have run for Mac (Jimmy Tat, Rudy Baronette, Scott Hutchinson).

Katie Anderson at Olympic Trials

Katie Anderson is Calgary tonight for the Olympic Trials. She is competing in the 1500m which has semi-finals set to go off at 8pm tonight. She is seeded ninth in her heat, and 4 move on plus 4 of the next fastes times between the two heats. That makes it tough for Katie to qualify on to the final, but it's likely going to be a kickers race, and their is nothing Katie is better at.

Last Week's Results at a Glance (June 18-24, 2012)

Another busy weeks for Marauder Running. In a meet that saw 42 men get under 4:00 for 1500m, a meet record, and McMaster Athletes hitting several significant PBs, the London 1500m Night did not disappoint. Leading the charge in a heat containing 4 other Marauders, Jordan Bierema had a mantastic run to get under 4 minutes for the first time. Only three days earlier he got under 2 minutes in the 800m for another first. A month ago Jordan got broke the 15 minute barrier in the 5000m in London. You know what we're thinking? Let's get this guy in a 10k and get him to break the 30 minute barrier while he's on a role! Also competing in his heat in the 1500m was a strong performance from Sean Bowen, Ryan Tice, and Eric Barry. Shortly after that great heat, was Katie Anderson in the fastest section of the Women's 1500m. Katie looked out of medal contention with a lap to go, but we should have known better to count her out as she came storming back in the final 150m, only to be out-leaned at the line. A very exciting performance, check out the video below. Oh and Katie ran a PB 4:24.09 which sets her up extremely well for Olympic Trials this week. In the final event of the night, Jeremy Walsh had a breakthrough performance running a 4 second PB, 3:50.39. He had only this to say, "asymptotic".

Sunday was a triathlon day as three athletes competed at three different events. Cindy Lewis, an early 2000 McMaster grad, crushed the 2000m swim in a Half Ironman Distance Swim/Bike race and finished 3rd overall at the Welland Du. Blair Morgan was at the Smith Falls Classic Triathlon and just missed the podium after a solid swim and great run! Across the world, also racing was recently named Olympic Alternate, Andrew Yorke. He finished 43rd in what was regarded as an Olympic preview event.

Last Week's Results at a Glance (June 11-17, 2012)

Another successful week for Marauders past and present, where every athlete hit the podium. On Friday was the Cambridge Classic Mile, where both Pauline Skowron and Jeremy Walsh medalled in the open events on the crushed gravel track. On Sunday, several Maruaders were at Guelph Lake Triathlon, including alumni Sean Bechtel taking 2nd in the men's Olympic race, with Andrew Bysice in 3rd. The relay event at Guelph Lake was won by a team comprised of Taylor Forbes, Lindsay Carson, and Steph MacNeill. Wrapping up the podium weekend was Katie Anderson with a 2nd place in Windsor with a 2:10 800m (outdoor PB?).

Also we recap results we've missed in the past couple weeks including some great track performances from Taylor Fox, and a 5k by MacNeill and Claire Stewart. If you have any other Marauder results be it from last year or within the last 100 years, let us know!

TheSpec Article on new Track and Recruits

We thought about just adding this post to the last as an update, but decided that it deserves it's own mention.

TheSpec posted an article about the new track at Mac. We'll break it down for those too lazy to read all 529 words.

1. The old track was built in 1983
2. Paula Schnurr went to the Olympics. Twice.
3. The new track will be 8-lane Mondo surface with FieldTurf
4. A name for the track is aimed to be released at the end of the month. We are suggesting "MacTrack" or "The Jeremy Walsh Experience"
5. With the new track the successful Twilight series will return.
6. Verbal commitments have been made and released from Madeline McDonald of Toronto Lawrence Park and Connor Darlington of Oshawa R.S. McLaughlin!

We'll keep you posted on further updates.

Update: Canadian Running Magazine also chimed in

McMaster University's New Outdoor Track

McMaster is getting a brand new track!

Update: Added pictures curtsey of Steph MacNeill

At this point, the excavation is mostly complete, and the new track surface will be put down over a two month process beginning this week or next week. Completion is expected at the end of August. We'll keep you posted with the progress, and make sure your the first to see the brand new facility.

Reminiscing

Many great races and events have been on the old track, and I'd like to take a minute to remember them. Personally, I'll remember the fighting through solo workouts in the summer heat, and running laps at 4am with great friends for Relay for Life.

But if we had to pick a video that the Mac track would be remembered for, we're going to have to pick this one. If you haven't seen this yet it's an absolute must see. Greg Anderson from Dundas Parkside runs 8:00.2 to win the Ofsaa 3000m in 1987. It is still the Ofsaa record 25 tears later. Greg's final 800m was 2:00, and final 1500m was 3:55. This was a North American record for 22 years until German Hernandez from California bested it in 2009. An intent observer can even see Guy Shultz (assistant coach at Western for both cross and track) finishing third in 8:31.70.

We'll miss you Mac track.
