Distance Junkies

Recently, some members of the McMaster men’s team have turned to the long race courses of the roads and trails to get their fill.  It started back on April 27th with men’s captain Jeremy Walsh making the jump right passed the marathon distance to compete in the Pick Your Poison 50km ultra race near Barrie, Ontario.  He won the event in a time of 4:06:24, winning by over 10 minutes.

On the same weekend, Around the Bay medalist Lionel Sanders made the trip to Kingston to take first place in the Limestone Half-Marathon in a time of 1:07:52.  In the 5km Limestone race Kingston local Blair Morgan placed second in a sprint finish behind Queen’s runner Jeff Costen, both finishing in 15:10.

A mere week later came “Half-Madness” with marauders heading to half-marathon races across the country.  Lionel Sanders came right back from his half the previous weekend to win the Mississauga Half-Marathon in a time of 1:06:30.  Just down the road, Keenan Viney and Ryan Tice raced the Goodlife Toronto Half-Marathon placing first and second in times of 1:10:43 and 1:12:22 respectively.  Finally, team manager Greg Lariviere celebrated his 21st birthday with a 21km race; making the trip to British Columbia to compete in the BMO Vancouver Half-Marathon finishing in 1:20:04.

Jeremy Walsh was also lured out to the B.C. coast where he competed in the 5 Peaks Trail Running Series event on May 11th.  The 14km trail race includes some tough mountain climbs and descents in Golden Ears Provincial Park on Vancouver Island.  Walsh placed fourth overall in a time of 1:02:06 in his first true mountain race.

Most recently two men returned to the trails of Dundas Valley Conservation Area, one of the team’s favourite training grounds, to compete in the Sulphur Springs Trail Run on May 25th.  Returning from the mountains of B.C. Jeremy Walsh claimed third place in the 25km event in a time of 1:42:52.  Gregory Lariviere took part in the 100 Mile Relay race on a team with 7 others from the local Orienteering/Racing group Don't Get Lost, with each runner completing a 20km leg.  He anchored his team to a second place finish with a 1:23:14 leg, the team finishing in 11:35:28, breaking the old course record but coming up just short of the win.

With the end of May, it seems so too ends the distance season.  Most are now returning to the land of speed demons on the track or focusing on the strength to close out triathlons.

Race Recap (Triathlon edition) - April/May

With the triathlon season now in full swing some of our elite triathletes travelled south to take part in various ITU Continental cup and ITU World cup races over the past 2 months. Alumni Andrew Yorke continues pursuing his Olympic dreams by trying, and succeeding, to make a name for himself among the worlds best Triathletes. Last Month he lined up against the best in San Diego's ITU World Triathlon Series race, big names including Alastiar Brownlee and Jan Frodeno, where he placed 38th overall. Yorke more recently lined up at the World cup race in Huatalco Mexico this past Sunday with fellow McMaster athletes Taylor Reid and John Rasmussen, who placed 20th and 24th respectively. Yorke placed 12th overall.

Rookie Austen Forbes took part in his first ever Olympic distance race and second ever ITU continental cup race  in Juan Dolio, The Dominican Republic. He placed 6th overall and posted the second fastest run time following behind Olympian Manuel Huerta.

Last month in April, alumni Andrew Bysice travelled south as well to race in the continental cup race in Bridgetown Barbados. Rain poured prior to the race which left the roads slick and the corners dangerous causing almost every athlete to wipe-out. Unfortunately Andrew was unable to finish after numerous crashes on the bike course. But not to worry, he trains like a true veteran to the sport, despite only starting a few years ago, and he is definitely ready to race like one too.

London Distance Series Meet #2 - Results, Videos, Recap

Humidity spoiled what was otherwise perfect weather conditions for the second London meet of the season, taking it's toll on the 5000m runners. Luke Charbonneau showed little problems with the weather in his 800m as he was handily under 2 minutes finishing 2nd in his heat with a 1:58.72. Check out his race video linked below for his very strong move down the backstretch to go from 5th to 2nd.

In the 5000m, Lindsay Carson finished as the top women in 16:23.03, and finished 3rd in her mixed heat. Her strong finish in this mixed race gives some relief to the Mac boys that may have been dropped by her throughout the year.

Also in the 5000m were Keenan Viney and Blair Morgan who ran 15:03.67 and 15:16.20 respectively. Viney finished in 2nd in the heat, benefiting from the early pacing work of Morgan who was unafraid to work hard early.

Race Videos

Some have mentioned that our posts have died off lately, and we're sorry for that and any other problems that may occur as we go through some changes on the blog. Lots of great things in the works, and we'll try to catch you up on all the results of late as soon as we can.

Ray Lewis Relays - May 2, 2013

McMaster University
XC & Track Teams is proud to host
the 2013 Ray Lewis Relays
in honour of Hamilton born
Olympian – “Rapid” Ray Lewis
(1910-2003).
Ray Lewis was born and died in Hamilton and was nicknamed Rapid Ray for his speed on the track. As a member of the track and field team at Hamilton’s Central Collegiate, Ray excelled in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 metre distances.  Ray was the first Canadian-born black Olympic medalist, capturing a bronze medal in the 4x400m relay at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics and a silver medal in the 4x440y relay at the 1934 British Empire Games.

This highschool track meet is the first meet to be hosted at McMaster's new track, and will be host to some fast times, on what should be a beautiful sunny day. We'll post results, and whatever photos and video we capture here after the meet, and hope to have some tweets posted @MacTrackVids. Come out and cheer on some of the areas best highschool runners, or take the opportunity to talk to any one of the many McMaster Marauder Track team volunteering at the meet.
